Active
Moving your Body, staying Connected.
Being active is about more than exercise. It is about continuing to move, participate, connect and enjoy the world around you.
Research shows that regular physical activity supports the heart, brain, muscles and bones. It may also help improve mood, sleep, balance, memory and everyday function, while reducing the risk of several health conditions associated with cognitive decline.
You do not need to be an athlete or follow a demanding exercise program to benefit. Walking the dog, gardening, dancing in the kitchen, swimming, stretching or playing with the grandchildren all count. The most helpful activity is often the one you enjoy enough to keep doing.
Staying socially active matters too. Spending time with others, sharing experiences and feeling part of a community can support emotional wellbeing, provide a sense of belonging and keep us engaged in life.
The ACTIVE pillar is about finding realistic and enjoyable ways to keep your body moving and remain connected—whatever your age, ability or starting point.
Ideas to explore:
- Choose movement you genuinely enjoy
- Look for simple opportunities to move throughout the day
- Try walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, cycling or gentle stretching
- Invite a friend or family member to join you
- Explore a local group, class, club or community activity
- Adapt activities to suit your health, mobility and ability
- Make time for relationships and experiences that bring connection and enjoyment
Being active does not have to mean doing more and more. Sometimes it simply means finding one enjoyable way to move or connect—and making it a regular part of your life.
