Stimulating the Mind
A curious mind is an active mind. Learning something new, exploring different ideas and continuing to challenge yourself can help keep your brain engaged throughout life.
Research suggests that education and mentally stimulating activities may help build cognitive reserve. This is the brain’s ability to adapt and continue functioning when faced with ageing, illness or change. It does not require formal study or complicated brain-training programs—it can grow through the interests, conversations and experiences that are already part of everyday life.
You might discover a new author, learn to play an instrument, try a different recipe, research your family history or master a feature on your phone. Puzzles and games can be enjoyable, but keeping the mind active can also come from creativity, problem-solving, meaningful conversations and being open to new experiences.
The EDUCATED pillar is about remaining curious—not knowing everything. It encourages us to keep learning, asking questions and discovering what captures our interest at every stage of life.
Ideas to explore:
- Read, write or learn more about something that interests you
- Try a course, workshop or community activity
- Learn a new skill, language, recipe, instrument or technology
- Enjoy puzzles, strategy games or creative hobbies
- Share ideas and experiences through meaningful conversations
- Try something unfamiliar that encourages you to think differently
Learning does not have an age limit. Whether it is a new skill or simply a new way of looking at something, every experience gives the brain an opportunity to stay engaged, adapt and grow.
